This article is intended for instructors looking to create text-grading item columns in Ultra Course View. 

# **Overview**

 Text Item columns allow instructors to enter custom text grades/information in the Gradebook. 

- Each row of a Text item can contain up to 32 characters.
- ⚠️ Text items cannot:
  - be connected to other assessments
  - have due dates or point values
  - be included in gradebook calculations

<summary>Creating a Text Item Column</summary>

1. From within your Ultra course, click the **Gradebook **tab** **from the top navigation menu.
2. Text item columns can be created from either the **Grid **or **List** views.
  1. From the*** *****Grid **view **, **hover over any grey line between columns, then click the** **:plus:.  Then select **Add Text Item**.
    
  2. From*** ***the **List **view **,** hover over any grey line between gradable items, then click the :plus:.  Then select **Add Text Item**.
    
3. Adjust the settings:
  1. Change the name of the column
  2. Set the visibility status
  3. Give a description if it is needed.
4. Once you finish setting it up, click **Save**.

<summary>Grading with a Text Item Column</summary>

1. Navigate to **Gradebook**.
2. Text item columns can be graded from either the **Grid **or **List** views.
  1. From the*** *****Grid **view :
    1. Click on a cell for the column.
    2. Enter your text grade in the popup on the right. You can enter up to 32 characters per row.
    3. Click Save once you are done.
  2. From*** ***the **List **view :
    1. Select the text item column by clicking its name.
    2. Click on **Add Text**.
    3. Enter your designated text grade in the text box. You can enter up to 32 characters per row.
    4. Press Enter on your keyboard to save.

<summary>Editing a Text Item Column</summary>

1. Navigate to **Gradebook**.
2. Text item columns can be edited from either the **Grid **or **List** views.
  1. From the*** *****Grid **view :
    1. Click the title of the text item that you want to edit.
    2. Click the gear button under the View button.
    3. Edit the settings.
    4. Click **Save**.
  2. From*** ***the **List **view :
    1. Click the three-dot icon for the text item that you want to edit.
    2. Click **Edit**.
    3. Edit the settings.
    4. Click **Save**.
