This article is intended for instructors looking to create Learning Modules in Ultra Course View (UCV).

# **Overview**

A **Learning Module **is a course object that can be used to contain and organize content, videos, assessments, and other course items. The alternative container option is a **Folder**.

**Learning Modules **are recommended as the first level of course organization in Ultra (unless your course utilizes Perusall) for the following reasons:

1. Learning Modules may contain Folders, however Folders cannot contain Learning Modules.
2. In comparison to Folders, Learning Modules offer several notable features including:
  - Module images that add visual aesthetics to the Course Content page
  - In-module navigation between content for students
  - Offers the “forced sequence” setting
  - Enhanced Progress Tracking

# **Creating a Learning Module**

1. From the Course Content** **of your HuskyCT Ultra course, click on the plus symbol.

2. Click **Create**.

3. Select **Learning module**.

4. Here you will see several settings that are possible while creating a Learning module.
  1. Clicking on the title “**New Learning Module**” allows you to rename the module.
  2. You can select the **visibility **status for students.
  3. An optional description box allows you to input text which will appear on the Course Content page.
  4. **Advance in sequence** requires students to progress through the module’s content and complete each item before being able to access the next sequential item. Additional detail is the Forced Sequence section below.
  5. **Image** allows you to include an image** **that is displayed with the learning module (see example below).

# **Forced Sequence**

<details>
<summary>Click to expand</summary>

- The Forced Sequence settings allows instructors to require students to progress through a learning module sequentially.
- If enabled, students can only access the next content or assessment after “Completing” each of previous content items, learning activities, or assessments in the sequence.
- Course links cannot be added to a learning module if a forced sequence is enabled.
- It’s recommend that instructors use student preview mode to test out the forced sequence to better understand how students navigate. To help onboard students, you can provide the link to this student support page that covers [Navigating Learning Modules with Forced Sequence](https://kb.uconn.edu/space/TL/27793096757/Navigating+Learning+Modules+with+Forced+Sequence).

> ⚠️ <u>Potential Issues:</u>
> ⚠️
> ⚠️ When forced sequence is enabled, students may face issues with items not being marked as complete, specifically when the item is a document that must be read by the student. This will prohibit the student from accessing the next item in the sequence. To fix this and have the item marked as complete, students must scroll all the way to the bottom of the page

### **Enabling Forced Sequence:**

1. Click the **three dots** to the right of your desired learning module. Click **Edit**

2. Check off **Forced Sequence** under **Advance in sequence**.

3. Click **Save**.

Modules with the Forced Sequence featured enabled will contain a message notifying students and instructors that students are to progress through the module in order.

# **Progress Tracking in Learning Modules**

<details>
<summary>Click to expand</summary>

Progress tracking allows module items to be turned into a checklist. If students submit, complete, or view an item, the student may check off the item and mark it as completed.

1. To turn on **Progress Tracking**, navigate to **Course Settings**.

2. Toggle on **Progress Tracking. **

With progress tracking turned on, students will see checkable bubbles next to each content item. Folders cannot be checked off until all items inside the folder have been opened and submitted. Items also cannot be checked off until the content has been submitted or viewed if a document.

Progress tracking also allows instructors to see **student progress **on a learning module. This will allow instructors to see the how students are navigating through the learning modules and an overall class progress.

In addition, you are able to sort through various students' progress which allows instructors to gauge the status of students on assignments and the learning module.

# **Auto-Generated Modules**

<details>
<summary>Click to expand</summary>

Auto-generated modules are AI generated modules that Ultra Course View will generate depending on your needs. This can be a useful tool for instructors who want to design a course with learning modules but want a shell to work with.
