This article covers how to provide grading and feedback for Ultra course assessments. 

# **Overview**

- When grading student submissions, instructors and TAs can input scores and provide feedback.
- Available feedback methods include: written feedback, rubric scoring, annotations/markup, and recorded video/audio feedback.
- **Student Grade Visibility**
  - Grades must be [‘](https://kb.uconn.edu/space/TL/26058752577/Posting+Grades+in+Ultra+Course+View)**[Posted’](https://kb.uconn.edu/space/TL/26058752577/Posting+Grades+in+Ultra+Course+View)**** **for students to see their score and feedback.
  - Assessment columns must also be visible for students to see their scores and feedback.

# **Grading Student Attempts**

- For assessments in which students submit work that requires grading (assignments, discussions, journals, tests w/ essay questions), scores are recommended to be input via the <span style="color: #bf2600">**attempt grading view**</span>.

<summary>Grading Assignments</summary>

1. Access student submissions by clicking the **Gradebook **tab.
2. Click on **To Do**.
3. Locate the assignment and click **Grade**.
4. Click on the empty “grade pill” in the top right and input the score.  Feedback can also be provided in the Overall Feedback box.
5. Once input, the score will be visible and the grade pill’s color will change.
  
6. To start grading the next student’s submission, click **Next Student**, or click on their name in the left side bar.

> ℹ️ - While grading, you can maximize the visual space by hiding the side panels. Click on the side arrows to hide or show the panels.

<summary>Grading Discussions</summary>

1. Access student submissions by clicking into **Gradebook**.
2. Click on **Overview**.
3. Locate the assignment and click **Grade**.
  
  
4. Click on the gray pill icon and enter a grade.  Feedback can be provided by clicking the feedback icon
  
5. To start grading the next student’s submission, click the student’s name in the top right corner.

<summary>Grading Tests</summary>

Instructors/TAs only need to provide manual grading for tests that contain essay** **questions.  **Essay questions can be graded student by student, or question by question. **

1. Access student submissions by clicking into **Gradebook**.
2. Click on **Overview**.
3. Locate the test and click **Grade**.
  
4. If “Students” is selected, grading will focus on an individual student’s submission.
  1. Locate the essay question within the test and enter a grade into the gray pill.
  2. Feedback can also be provided by clicking the feedback icon .
    
    
5. If “Questions” is selected, grading will display the responses to the selected essay question.
  
6. By default, Tests are set to “Post grades automatically”.  This means that once essay questions are graded, students will see their scores and feedback.

<summary>Grading with Rubrics</summary>

For assessments that have an attached rubric, the score should be tabulated by selecting rubric fields for the attempt to be considered “Graded”.  

1. From the right side Grading Rubric panel, click a performance level for each criteria.
2. Once selected, the points for that criteria will be added to the assessment score.
3. Alternatively, you can view and grade from the full rubric by clicking the pop-out symbol.
4. From the full rubric, select the performance levels for each criteria to tabulate the total score.
5. Once all rubric criteria have been evaluated, the final score tabulation will be visible in the grading pill at the top. No other score grading needs to be done.
6. Written Feedback can also be provided in the Note to Student box by minimizing the Grading Rubric.

<summary>Grading Multiple Attempts</summary>

> ℹ️ When grading an assignment with multiple attempts, the assignment settings are important in how they reflect in the **Gradebook**. Within the assignment click into the settings.

> ℹ️ Under the settings it is important to note what the **Attempts to Grade **setting is set to.

> ℹ️ - **First Attempt** - when grading attempts, only the <u>**FIRST**</u>** **submission’s grade will be reflected within the gradebook column.
> ℹ️ - **Last Attempt **- when grading attempts, only the <u>**LAST**</u> submission’s grade will be reflected within the gradebook column.
> ℹ️ - **All Attempts**  - when grading attempts, <u>**ALL**</u> attempts should be graded.
> ℹ️   - The grade reflected within the gradebook column is also determined based of the additional assessment setting--**average grade, highest grade, **and** lowest grade.**

Assignments with multiple attempts can be accessed through the** **<span style="color: #bf2600">**attempt grading view**</span>.

1. To begin, navigate to the **Gradebook.**
2. Click on the list view icon.
3. You will now see the gradable items page that provides information about the assignment/assessments.
4. By clicking on the assessment name, you will be able to access the **attempt grading view**. Under a student submission, click on **ATTEMPT #/#** dropdown to view the different attempts.

5. Clicking on the attempts dropdown will allow you to see when the student submitted each attempt.

5. Click on a specific attempt number to change which attempt you are currently grading or reviewing.

7. Then proceed with providing scores and feedback as needed.

# **Providing Feedback**

Like scores, **Feedback** cannot be viewed by students unless the assessment grade is ‘Posted’ and the column is visible.  

- Also, a grade cannot be ‘Posted’ unless there is a score.
- This means that students cannot view **Feedback** unless there is also an assessment score.

<summary>Note to Student, Feedback, and Attempt Feedback</summary>

Instructors can provide written feedback within the **Note to Student **and **Attempt Feedback** **boxes** for assignments and discussions, journals, test essay questions.

- **Note to Student** is used to provide overall feedback or comments for assessments. The note is not tied to a specific submission attempt.
- **Attempt Feedback** is used to provide feedback for an individual submission attempt. If a student has multiple attempts, each attempt can have its own feedback.

From the <span style="color: #bf2600">**attempt grading view **</span>for assessments, Note to Student will be on the right side.  If it is not visible, click the **arrow icon**.

For discussions or journals, click the speech bubble with a plus sign to open **Note to Student**.

- In the text box, you can input and format written feedback, attach files  , insert links   , and record audio/video feedback.
- Once you are finished inputting feedback, click **Save**.
- Feedback can be edited even if grades have been posted. To edit, navigate back to the grading view and click the pencil icon

<details>
<summary>Audio/Video Feedback</summary>

Instructors/TAs can provide audio/video feedback within the Feedback box while grading student submissions. 


1. Click on the **camera **icon in the feedback box.
  
2. Select what you would like to record. You may receive a pop window asking to allow permissions to share with [lms.uconn.edu](http://lms.uconn.edu). If so, select Allow.
3. Click the **record **button to start recording located in the top right. There will be a **3-second** countdown.
  
4. Once finished, pause the recording or end recording. To proceed to video details, click **End recording. **
5. Next, edit the video details.
6. After finalizing the video and audio, click **Save Video**. The video will appear within the Overall Feedback box.

<summary>Annotation/Markup on File Submissions</summary>

Graders can use inline annotation/markup tools to provide feedback on submitted files types including PDFs, Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, Digital images (JPEG, PNG, etc) and more.  [See the full list](https://help.blackboard.com/Learn/Administrator/SaaS/Tools_Management/Inline_Grading).  

- 💡 **Tip: **You can expand the submission annotation space by hiding the left and right side panels.

1. Annotations can be done by clicking any of the icons on the tool bar shown above.
  - Viewing & Navigation:
    - Use the hand icon  to pan. Click and drag the cursor to navigate.
    - Use the magnifying glasses  to zoom in or zoom out.
    - Use the box icon   to resize the file to fit your screen.
  - Annotation & Markup:
    - Use the pen icon  , and drop-down menu to select the Drawing, Brush, or Eraser tool.
      - Drawing provides hand drawn lines
      - Brush provides wider highlighting
      - Eraser allows you to erase
    - Additionally, pen settings including color, opacity, and thickness can be customized underneath the adjust/view icons.
      
  - Use the picture icon   to upload images directly onto the submission file. Additionally, clicking the arrow next to the icon allows you to draw on pre-created **stamps **(images) HuskyCT has provided.
  - The comment icon  allows you to add a comment box which can be viewed on the side of the file.
    - Add a comment by clicking the icon and then clicking directly on the file. After writing a comment, make sure to click **save**.
    - To make an anonymous comment, select the incognito icon.
  - Text can be highlighted to highlight, strikethrough, underline, squiggle, or make comments.
    
  - The textbox icon  allows you to create textboxes directly on to the file. Graders can select anywhere on the file to create textboxes. Additional options can be found under the tool bar.
    
  - The line icon  allows you to create shapes/arrows/lines onto the file. Click on the arrow for more options.
2. Additionally, graders can print and download the submission including the annotative feedback, or click the icon above   to download the original submission without the annotations.

<summary>Automated Feedback on Test Questions</summary>

## Automated Feedback

Instructors can input automatic feedback for auto-graded test questions, prior to administering the test.  ⚠️ This must be done while making/editing the Assessment.

1. The following auto-graded test questions have the option for automatic feedback.
  
2. The **Automated Feedback** setting can be enabled below the answer choices. Feedback can be added for correct or incorrect answers.

3. After adding any automated feedback, click **Save. **
4. Students will be able view feedback once grades are posted and in accordance with the Assessment results settings.

<summary>Feedback on Gradebook Columns</summary>

1. Go to the **Gradebook.**
2. Find the exam you are grading and click on it.
3. You should see all of your students' attempts. If you click on a student’s name, you should be able to see their attempt.
4. On the right side of the page, you will find the **Note to Student **option.

5. Provide feedback and click Save.

# **Student View**

Students can access their feedback by re-entering the item through either the **Course Content **page or the Gradebook. The method for viewing feedback is the same for a discussion, test, or assignment. The steps below outline the student view for a test.

<summary>Student View of Grades & Feedback</summary>

1. Navigate to the **Gradebook**.
2. Locate the assignment and click **View.** Alternatively, students can click on the title of the assignment and select **View Submission. **
3. **Overall Feedback** is located on the right side.

Feedback for** individual questions** on a test will be located at the bottom of each question.
