# About the Minimum Class Size Policy

In November 2025, the university approved a policy providing class size enrollments below which classes will not ordinarily be offered. Please refer to the [policy language](https://policy.uconn.edu/2025/11/19/minimum-class-size-enrollment-policy-on/) for details about the types of courses the policy applies to as well as the minimum enrollments required for different course levels.

# Approving Policy Exceptions

All exceptions to the policy must be approved by the respective Dean’s office in consultation with the Provost (or Provost’s designee), and implemented by the Office of the Registrar. CLSS may only be used to request ad hoc exceptions for individual classes.

> ❌ Instructors may not request exceptions to the policy. If you feel an exception is warranted for your class, please coordinate with your department head and your department’s scheduling administrator to submit the request.

## Permanent Exceptions

For some courses, permanent exceptions for all sections of the course may be appropriate. Requests for permanent exceptions must be made, in writing, by the Dean or Dean’s designee to the Registrar’s Office. Requests should be sent to r[egistrarscheduling@uconn.edu.](mailto:registrarscheduling@uconn.edu)

## Justifications for Exceptions

Only the justifications described in the [policy](https://policy.uconn.edu/2025/11/19/minimum-class-size-enrollment-policy-on/) may be used for exceptions. Please see the policy for the list of exceptions.

# Identifying Classes with Enrollments Below the Minimum

To identify classes in your department with enrollments below the minimum, please refer to the [Classes Under Minimum Enrollment report](https://uconn.sharepoint.com/:x:/s/registrarsharedfiles/IQD_rDOfF162QroutysPNNcoAdrAgZLxpucdXtpLv2usi74?e=oZOfFM).

This report is refreshed on a nightly basis and *excludes* (1) class types to which the policy does not apply, and (2) classes for which exceptions have already been approved. If a class does not appear on the list, it means that it is not currently below the minimum (though changes to enrollment may impact that).

> ℹ️ The data in the report is typically a day behind, so changes to enrollment or approved exceptions may take more than 24 hours to reach the report.

# How to Request an Exception in CLSS

Requests for exceptions must be submitted on a section-by-section basis.

## Step 1: Select Justification

Exceptions can be requested via Section Attributes. To select the justification, open the section in CLSS and, in the Section Editor, first select the pencil icon next to the Section Attributes heading:

Then, select the appropriate justification from the drop-down list. You may either scroll through the list or begin typing to locate the justification:

## Step 2: Provide Details (optional)

To help ensure a quick review and approval of your exception request, please provide any relevant details supporting your request in the Internal Comments field.

## Step 3: Workflow

Once you select the “Save Section” button, the request will automatically be submitted through workflow. The request will go to the Dean’s office for approval and the Registrar’s Office for processing.
