Students, faculty, and staff should encrypt their drives to increase data security. Internal (inside the computer) and external (USB, docks, etc.) drives can be encrypted using tools built into your computer.

## macOS

macOS automatically encrypts hard drives using file vault. This takes place the first time a user signs into a Mac device. The [Technology Support Center](https://its.uconn.edu/techsupport/) can provide a file vault key if required.
