Students, faculty and staff use Outlook for email communications. There are currently two versions of the Outlook application, Outlook and Outlook Legacy. All users should begin their transition to the new Outlook app.

> 📝 Microsoft is in the process of upgrading the Outlook app and released the new app before retiring the old app. In April 2026, the old “Outlook Legacy” app will be retired.

## Outlook Legacy

The look of the legacy app receives feature updates that add to its functionality. This version of Outlook can hold a copy of your data locally, or access it in the Microsoft cloud.

##  The new Outlook

The new Outlook app’s visual appearance is identical to the web-version of the service at [s.uconn.edu/outlook](http://s.uconn.edu/outlook).

## Differences

The New Outlook app is constantly receiving updates. A brief list as of early June 2025:

- New Outlook can hold up to 180 days of mail Offline  
Outlook Legacy can hold entire mailbox
- New Outlook does not yet support multiple mail profiles
- New Outlook’s Shared Mailbox support is ongoing (partially available now)
- New Outlook partially supports .PST files
- New Outlook has new, advanced calendar and mailbox features
- New Outlook supports more Copilot features
- New Outlook partially supports MailMerge and QuickParts
