UConn students have access to Google Workspace: a virtual suite of tools and applications that you can use for your assignments, projects, and personal work. Your Google Workspace files are stored in Google Drive, a cloud-based storage solution linked to your UConn Gmail account.

> 📝 Google Workspace services, including student email, storage, and digital collaboration, will move to Microsoft 365 in 2024. [Learn more >](https://its.uconn.edu/google-to-microsoft-365-transition/)

To get started and familiarize yourself with your Google Workspace account, review the following:

### Create files in Google Workspace

Google Workspace includes a variety of web applications that you can use to create, edit, and collaborate on files of many different types. Use your UConn email address and password to sign into web programs including:

- **[Google Docs](https://docs.google.com)**
  - Create and edit text-based documents
- **[Google Sheets](https://sheets.docs.google.com)**
  - Create and format spreadsheets
- **[Google Slides](https://docs.google.com/presentation/u/0)**
  - Create and design presentations

### Organize your files in Google Drive

Your Google Drive is where all of the files you create in your Google Workspace are automatically stored. You can create folders to organize these files and more easily access the materials you need for your different classes and extracurriculars.

### Share and collaborate on your Google files

Every file you create in Google Workspace can be shared with one or more individuals. When you share a file with others, you can limit or expand their accessibility by specifying their role:

- **Viewer**
  - Viewers can open and view the file, but cannot make edits or share it with others.
- **Commenter**
  - Commenters can leave highlights, comments, and suggestions on the file, but cannot make edits or share it with others.
- **Editor**
  - All editors can edit the file simultaneously, view each other’s edits in real time, leave comments, accept or reject suggestions, and share the file with others.

### Change general access settings for your Google files

Any files you create in Google Workspace are accessible through the file’s link. You can control who can open a file’s link by specifying its general access settings:

- **Restricted**
  - Only you and any viewers, commenters, or editors you have shared it with can open the link to the file.
- **University of Connecticut**
  - Anyone within the UConn community can open the link to the file.
- **Anyone with the link**
  - Anyone who has the link to the file can access it without signing into their Google account.
