Microsoft is deprecating protocols that use basic authentication on October 1st, 2022. Outlook does not support OAuth with IMAP / POP. If you would like to continue using IMAP and POP, with a client app, you’ll need another app such as [Thunderbird](/wiki/pages/resumedraft.action?draftId=26063831538).

> ℹ️ Note: Microsoft does **NOT **recommend Thunderbird for Office 365 use as there are often significant limitations in the functionality of the client.

To continue to receive mail in the Thunderbird client, the authentication method in the client must be changed from Normal password to OAuth2 as shown below:

To continue to send mail in the Thunderbird client, the SMPT settings must be updated as shown below:

## POP configuration

To utilize POP in Thunderbird do the following:

- When prompted to create an account, select “Setup existing Email Address”
- Enter your Email address and password and select “Continue”
- A new box will pop up asking for either IMAP or POP3, select POP3 and then Done and then Finish
POP3 is now configured on the Thunderbird client
- There may not be a way for to change the authentication setting if you do not already have an account added. Instead, click “Configure Manually” and enter the following information:

- Click “Done,” a Microsoft log in window should pop up
- Enter your password, a Duo push screen will appear. Accept the Duo request and then click “Yes, trust browser”
- You should now see a Microsoft permissions request if you have never used Thunderbird, click “Accept”
- You will be brought back to the setup screen. You may see an error if you previously attempted to add an account and it failed. Ignore the error, click “Done” and it will add the account.
