## Understanding the Vocabulary

Below are some basic digital signage terms that you may need to familiarize yourself with. They are also described in this video: [Carousel Training: Navigation & Vocabulary](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JvF3AlVcUn4).

### **Server**

- A computer that holds all the pieces together
- Carousel software is installed on this
- ITS manages the server

### **Player**

- The player receives all the signage information from the server, and powers the content displayed on the screen
- Players are connected to displays via HDMI cable
- Players are owned by the department, school, or college

### **Channel**

The collection of all the content displayed on the screen is called a channel. Your channel can be split up into zones which update independently with different messages that are displayed on the screen. Bulletins represent the activity happening in each zone.

#### **Zone**

Sections of the channel that updates independently

- Dividers of different messages on your channel
- Several types of messages can appear on a loop within a zone in your channel

#### **Bulletin**

The messages that are displayed in the zones

- Bulletins represent the activity happening in each zone
- Bulletins can be created from Twitter, Instagram, Calendars, Events, Photos, Videos, and more

## Tips

Most of your work in Carousel will be at the Zone level. This is where you will create manage content for bulletins, and where you will manage external media for those bulletins such as images and videos.

1. To edit the content that will display on a certain part of the screen, you will need to select the correct zone.
2. Each zone has its own unique set of bulletins that update independently within your channel. Note that if you have multiple channel displays, those channels can share zones.
3. Determine which zone you are working in from the drop-down menu on the Main Menu page and scroll through the list to find the zone you want to edit.
4. Select which function you would like to perform in your zone: Creating Bulletins, Managing Bulletins, Managing Templates, Managing Media.
