## Tips for Saving Space

### Edit Images Before Uploading

If you edit images in WordPress, it appears as if you have done the correct thing of resizing and cropping the image down. However, the WordPress image editor is non-destructive, which means it keeps the original in the Media Library and creates a duplicate for the newly edited version. Instead, try one of the following software to reduce the image size:

- [Google Squoosh](https://squoosh.app) (image compression and resize)
- [TinyPNG](https://tinypng.com/) (image compression)
- [GIMP](https://www.gimp.org/) (resize and edit the image)
- [Fotor](http://www.fotor.com/) (resize and edit the image)
- [Resizeimage](https://resizeimage.net/) (crop and edit the image)
- [Photoshop ](https://software.uconn.edu/software/photoshop-express/)(Go to **Image **>** Image Size**, and choose a resolution of **72px**, and if your width is larger than **1200px**, you’ll want to reduce that as well. Then, use the **File **>** Save for Web…** option to compress the image into a JPG. This process can compress a print quality image by as much as **99%**.)

### Export Screen Versions of Office Documents

Programs like Word and PowerPoint have options for saving smaller versions of the original document. Use Acrobat online PDF compressor to reduce the size of your PDF file.

### ZIP Files

If you have a large number of files that people will commonly want to access together, you can bundle and compress them into a single ZIP file for additional storage saving.

### Clear Gravity Form Entries

The entries do not take up space within the individual accounts unless there are files attached to the entries. Setup times to periodically [Export Entries](https://uconn.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/IKB/pages/10841162814), download the attached files using [Bulk Download](https://kb.uconn.edu/space/IKB/10841162814/Export%20Form%20Entries#Bulk-Download) and then clear the entries in Gravity Forms. To clear the entries:

1. Select the entries
2. Click on **Bulk actions**
3. Select **Trash **
4. Click on **Apply**
5. Click on the **Trash** list to view the items that have been trashed
6. Click on **Empty Trash**

### Off-Site Storage

For sites with truly massive storage needs, it may be necessary to keep files on another web server and link to them. When inserting an image or linking to a document, rather than browsing the Media Library, you would just enter the URL of the file on the other server. If you require this setup, contact [webdev@uconn.edu](mailto:webdev@uconn.edu) about obtaining an account.
