For faculty or staff members whose University-owned Mac is part of the ITS Managed Workstation program, ITS will be encrypting the hard drives on workstations running macOS starting in 2020. This will add additional security to the workstation and render your data inaccessible if it is stolen.

> ⚠️ All Apple systems are managed by ITS with** ****[JAMF](https://www.jamf.com/products/jamf-pro/)**. ITS will use **JAMF** to push out the update. Per [University Policy](https://security.uconn.edu/confidential-data-security-standard/), all assigned University devices must be encrypted; JAMF insures compliance.

## Encrypting Your Computer

1. The info in this section is <u>only applicable</u> for devices enrolled <u>prior to 3/1/2022</u>. After this date, the Encryption process takes place during the first login by clicking **Allow** when prompted.
2. Log out of your computer.
3. There will be a prompt on the **login** screen stating that your Mac is scheduled for a reboot. Click **OK**.
4. Once the computer restarts, log into it again.
5. A message stating that you have been required by your administrator to enable **FileVault** will appear. Click **Enable**. Your computer will then restart. ** **
6. After your computer restarts, log into it again.
7. An **Enabling FileVault on your volume** prompt will then appear. Press **OK.**

> ❌ If you do not press **OK **during this step, you will have to log out of your computer, log in again, and repeat **Steps** **4** through **6**.

## Changes After Encryption

Below is a list of the changes that you can expect following encryption.

- Your login screen will change to a UConn-themed login screen if it has not already.
- When you restart the computer on a managed and encrypted Mac, your login screen will appear as the following:

## Checking Encryption Progress

> ℹ️ Typically, the encryption process takes approximately 15 minutes.

1. Navigate to **System Preferences.**
2. Click **Security and Privacy.**
3. Click on the **FileVault** tab.
