IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) is an email protocol used for retrieving and storing incoming mail sent over SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol). Faculty and staff can set up their Outlook client using IMAP for their Office 365 account.

## For Outlook 2016

1. Open the **Outlook desktop client**.
2. Click **File. **Then click** Account Settings **in the drop-down menu.
3. Click **New** to create a new profile.
4. Select **Manual setup or additional server types**. When finished, click **Next**.
5. Select **POP or IMAP**. Click **Next**.
6. In the POP and IMAP account settings page, fill in the information below:
  - **Your Name**: your display name.
  - **Email Address**: your primary UConn email address in the format *firstname.lastname@uconn.edu*.
  - **Account Type**: IMAP.
  - **Incoming Mail Server**: outlook.office365.com
  - **Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)**: smtp.office365.com
  - **User Name**: your primary UConn email address in the format *firstname.lastname@uconn.edu*.
  - **Password**: your NetID password.
7. Click **More** **Settings **in the bottom right corner. Your email address should auto-populate in the **General **tab.
8. Click on the **Outgoing Server** tab and check the box next to **My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication**.
9. Ensure that **Use same settings as my incoming mail server **is selected.
10. Click on the **Advanced** tab. Update the following:
  1. Incoming mail server (IMAP): *993*
  2. Use the following type of encrypted connection: *SSL*
  3. Outgoing server (SMTP): *587*
  4. Use the following type of encrypted connection: *TLS*
11. Click **OK** and then **Next**. Ensure the **Test Account Settings** complete successfully. Click **Finish**.
