This article provides a high-level overview of the UConn-supported service. > ℹ️ **Use the UConn workspace for institutional work.** Sign in with your UConn account and confirm that **UConn** appears in the lower-left corner of ChatGPT before entering university information. UConn’s agreement with OpenAI protects institutional prompts and responses from being used to train OpenAI models. Always review AI-generated content for accuracy, bias, confidentiality, and appropriateness. ## In this article > Macro (toc) ## Who can use ChatGPT through UConn? Individuals who are employed by the University and will use the license for institutional activities (research, teaching, or administration) are eligible to use the UConn-licensed service. **Eligible employees** include: - Faculty - Staff - Student employees; must use their [NetIDwork account](https://uconn.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/IKB/pages/10785227625)* - Graduate students; must use their [NetID work account](https://uconn.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/IKB/pages/10785227625)* * A faculty or staff member must purchase the license on behalf of the student. Once purchased, they sign in to their accounts with their UConn email address. > ℹ️ Students who are not employees should use the [Copilot Chat](https://uconn.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/AI/pages/29080485930) service included with their UConn Microsoft 365 account or sign up for a personal ChatGPT account. Instructors or departments should contact ITS to discuss instructional needs and available options. ## Purchase UConn-licensed ChatGPT Eligible employees may purchase a purchase a license, which must be renewed annually, from [software.uconn.edu](https://software.uconn.edu/software/chatgpt/). UConn offers two ChatGPT Edu tiers. Both include the standard ChatGPT subscription; the main difference is how advanced models and features are funded. | | | | | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Tier | Best for | Usage | Cost and billing | | Base | Routine writing, summarization, file work, data analysis, and general productivity | Includes 260 credits per month. You are billed for credits consumed beyond the standard allowance. | $236 per year plus quarterly usage billing through the university. A credit is approximately $0.04; rates can change. | Credit rates vary by model and feature. Advanced reasoning models, Agent Mode, Deep Research beyond the included allowance, image generation beyond the included allowance, voice, and some spreadsheet or workspace-agent features can consume credits. Standard drafting, editing, summarization, file uploads, data analysis, web search, Canvas, and custom GPT workflows generally use included models or allowances. OpenAI may automatically route a complex request to a usage-based reasoning model, so check the selected model when conserving credits. > ℹ️ Due to frequent changes, ITS recommends viewing OpenAI’s ChatGPT rate card. If the assigned tier does not match your purchase or renewal, contact [ITS](https://its.uconn.edu/techsupport/) rather than purchasing a second license. ## What can ChatGPT do? - **Chat and writing:** Ask questions, draft or revise text, summarize material, translate, brainstorm, and develop outlines or plans. - **Files and document analysis:** Upload supported documents or datasets and ask ChatGPT to summarize, compare, extract information, or identify patterns. ChatGPT does not automatically access OneDrive, Outlook, Teams, or files on your computer; you must intentionally provide files or information. - **Web search and research:** Use web-enabled responses for current information and source discovery. Deep Research can perform more extensive, multi-step research and produce a sourced report. - **Data analysis and coding:** Analyze data, create tables or charts, explain code, troubleshoot scripts, and assist with technical workflows. - **Canvas:** Work on longer documents or code in an interactive editing area. Canvas is intended for collaborative drafting and revision within ChatGPT. - **Images and voice:** Depending on account and workspace availability, ChatGPT can generate images and support spoken conversations. These advanced capabilities may use credits. - **Custom GPTs:** Create specialized assistants with instructions and reference files for a particular workflow. Availability, sharing, and administrative controls may differ in the UConn workspace. - **Agents and connected services:** Some ChatGPT experiences can take multi-step actions or connect to external services. Connections are subject to UConn security controls and may require administrator approval. - **OpenAI API:** Developers may use the API to integrate OpenAI models into software. API usage is separate from the ChatGPT interface and should be reviewed for security, cost, and data-management requirements.
